Ancient Peoples and the Sauna

The term "Sauna" is the only Finnish word to be incorporated into the English dictionary. The legacy of modern sauna culture is based on the traditions of Finland. Finland may have the oldest and continuous Sauna Culture, reaching 9000 years into the past. However, this practice is documented all over the world, showing us how important this practice has been to humankind since the dawn of recorded history and beyond.

There are more Saunas in Finland than people. 90% of Finns Sauna once per week.

The Finnish origin of the Sauna is thought to have begun up to 9000 years ago. The story begins in the cold dark forest of Finland. The stone age ancestors found relief from the brutal cold by heating rocks in hand dug pits in the woods.

The Sauna became a place of healing and cleansing. It was used for women to give birth.

Ancient Greek & Roman Bathhouses

Hot therapy played such a critical role in ancient Greece and Rome, they build grand bathhouses. The engineering was impressive. The Laconicum was the superheated dry sweating room. Patrons would then visit the Frigidarium, the cold bath room.

The engineering was astounding. Early baths used natural hot springs as the heat source. Later, large furnaces and boilers sent hot air through hollow walls to supply the Saunas with steam. The leftover hot water was used for hot baths and was cleverly designed to naturally circulate water by convection.

Bathhouse were build across the Mediterranean and cost two Denarii (roman currency), making it available for the common folk, as well as the Roman elite.
